The REAL BTS: Euphoria [2011]

"Filmception" - as one of the YouTuber commented at this video.

Yeah you can say that, a concept that came to mind after much thought when the theme first came out for the BMW shorties 2011: Joy. As a filmmaker. As a Malaysian.

But now that the theme has "progressed" from that to just "Joy", it's no surprise why the chances of entering top 10 decreased drastically. Well then, I guess we still got much to learn! (competition technicality wise)

I've got quite a few interesting responses for Euphoria. Some saw the beauty of it while some still struggle grasping the main storyline behind the whole short film. So.. to clear everything up, here goes:

- It's titled Euphoria due to the fact that in today's era, many settle for quick and instant laughter. Although temporary and often time than not involving painful circumstances, it's that heightened burst of happiness they yearn for only. Versus to a deep and calm sense of joy, unwavering despite the circumstances faced, this short film attempts to address just that.

- The "blueprint" background at the start isn't random or just for fun. It's to represent on how today's education and upbringing culture has made many people into blueprints of a desired design. A design that deaden our senses for a deep, real joy.

- The concept of this short film is to show joy in a few approaches:-
a.) Euphoria, the movie itself
i.) Gavin attempts to give Long a paradigm shift on his ideas of what Joy is. He does that by first turning in boring and mundane life into a whirlwind as he brings back 2 of his long lost childhood mates. One is his lover while the other, his best friend. Gavin then takes away his lover and causes Long to pay close attention to what Gavin has to say. He believes in human supremacy and that to really reap the joy of life, one must achieve the maximum capacity of human emotions and brilliance and erase away unnecessary relationships that hinders that very goal.
ii.) Long found back his deep sense of joy as he now really wants to fight back for both of his lover and friend. He tries but wasn't able to take down the thug or Gavin.. yet managed to do so finally after hurling a difficult philosophy for Gavin to reconcile.
iii.) Chen expressed his joy of a reunion after not seeing each other for so long. He's willing to risk himself to save the day but obviously - it failed.

b.) The film-making process
i.) The in-between clips that shows the "behind the scenes" display of how much work and effort required to produce such a film. Everyone being focused in their roles and ensure that it all goes well. It shows that the pride and joy the crew can take in after all the effort placed into it.
ii.) The fun parts also show that it isn't all serious and no laughs at all. The crew cherish these memories and will always reflect on the joyful days of film making.

c.) The interview footage
i.) The up-close and personal talks with the different roles of the production as they each express their own unique ways of deeming joy in their lives.

Yet, at the end of the day, can one really describe what joy is?

It was a great collaboration with threeminutenights and Jenn as their contribution has no doubt increased the quality of this production. Not to mention a few more others who helped out in so many ways, THANK YOU!

It took us exactly 11 hours to shoot this and countless hours to edit it. Special credits to Jee Yann and Devon Chew to produce the soundtrack in such a short span of time!

However, I've been contemplating to whether fully produce Euphoria without the "filmception" concept.. what do you guys think?

1st Sundaeversary 2011 presents you

Like they always say, times flies!

Many videos produced, many people met and quite a few events attended over the year. As cliche as it sounds, it is hard to believe that Sundae Productions is where it is today!

Anyhow, to those attending the 1st Sundaeversary, here are a few things to look forward to at that night (aside from the premiering of Euphoria 2011 of course):

- Screening of MY Generation 2.0, produced by Aaron Lim productions
- Screening of a few benchmark videos in sundae productions
- Screening of Sundae Productions 2011 video reel!

It's a good night to get to know each other as well as this will be first time all of SDP's talents gather at one same place and formally know each other. Who knows what kind of collaborated projects you guys can do together? :)

So be sure to get there on time and if you have any questions at all, ask away!

As for the other dear fans of SDP.. thank you, every single one of you from the bottom of our hearts. If only we had a bigger budget to accommodate all of you. But fret not, there's always more to come and all your contribution and support will ensure a bigger and louder event next time around!

As for now, a pretty nice wrap up for the year with entering Jayesslee's concert and the production of Euphoria [2011] (Y).

Oh yes, just in case for those who aren't too sure what's this whole Euphoria is about, it's actually a film competition entry known as BMW Shorties 2011. BMW? Yup, you got that right - German Car Brand lol. And officially, this is SDP's first movie entry for a competition as well as the largest production ever yet. (although frankly, it isn't some blockbuster multi-million dollar production la)

Looking forward to see you guys there!

Decimal ft. Jenn's opening of Jayesslee Live in KL!

It's really interesting to see how far all of us has reached this far and for myself, I thought this day would be way later than expected!

What a great way to wrap up for SDP's 1st year anniversary :)

I'm really glad to be involved in after approaching Decimal to see if they want me to record down their performance and to witness their dedication of pursuing excellence and not settle for mediocrity. We're in dire need for that in the artistic industry, right here in Malaysia!

Overall, in my opinion, they performed well :) No doubt, a sense of nervousness was noticed but hey, I don't think I can even hum note a up there with such a crowd right in front me!

Jenn did a fantastic job as usual on stage as well. Really liked the way of her showmanship - and she tells me that she's a really shy girl. (What nonsense right?)

On the technical side of things, it was rather hard to get good angles at the front as we'll be blocking people of their sight towards the performance.. so we had to station our cameras to the back of the hall instead. Hence you see shaky shots when it's zoomed in to the band as it becomes highly sensitive to the movements of our hands when it's THAT near.

However, the audio aspect was pretty good as the crowd was a great crowd as well. They listened and cheered at the right moments - it almost feel as if the concert is about Decimal and Jenn lol.

So people! Just in case you didn't know, here are some details about the performers:

Decimal - Cover on I Want You Back by Jackson 5

What an honour! To be invited of being a part of their production in their first 'professionally' recorded session (compared to the previous live recording at various gigs), it was really great being in the midst of them performing such awesome music!

By far one of the best local bands ever I've seen, especially during live performance. Tight, immense and jaw-dropping.

Just in case you guys want to find out more about them, I've written a post previously, just click here to read up more!

To me, this production further encouraged me to see Malaysian talents showing off to the world what we have to offer. Certainly, I'll be looking forward for more!

P.S - Did you know that they're opening for the upcoming Jayesslee concert in Malaysia? BUY YOUR TICKETS NOW! :)

BTS: "The Dawn"

For SDP's first relationship based video - allow me to first express my gratitude to all the support and personal encouragement!

The making of this video sure didn't come easy. After much planning and working through the casts, many has commented that this video's cast did a good job. Kudos guys :)

I had a great time working with them too, especially working together with my usual film making buddies, Gary Liew as the co-director and Raffi Th'ng as the cinematographer. Gregory Sze and Jenn Chia was easy to work with and I was blown away by their acting skills! :o

Although this video did not have the strong viral factor compared to videos like "Ha? What's GG?", it was already anticipated due to the message this video is trying to convey.

Going through personally the heartbreaks itself, like someone close to me said - "No one wants to feel that they're going through a failing relationship." However, the real message that I was trying to convey was towards the deep cut that we always recklessly slice ourselves with.. that we just don't take life seriously enough to have a matured relationship.

Anyways, towards the technical side of the video, we only took one day to shoot all the scenes. Editing wise was a slow process but thankfully, it turned out well :) Struggled quite a bit with the background music but after gaining the green light from the man himself, David Story, it worked out pretty well!

A personal thank you to the others who volunteered in this - Cher Maine, Steven Tey, Johnson Khor (The guy in science!), Jin Yin, Craig and Colin.

Not forgetting of course, an awesome friend of mine who agreed to offer his cafe to shoot the cafe scene also known as EcoGreen Organic. Offering a great range of organic food and chilling ambiance, do drop by and have a look!

The best of the best

While watching this live on television at a mamak, I was contemplating whether to do a highlights of this match like I did for the previous badminton match, All England 2011 finals. But after watching how drastically our national hero has improved compared to his performance back in Olympics 2008 against the same opponent, Lin Dan, I told myself that I had to compile the best moments of this match for the world to watch!

It was actually quite tough making this video as I didn't want to make a "Part 2" to it, most people would have felt that 15 minutes is long enough. So I had to filter out only for the best! This match was originally 1 hour and 20+ mins..so yup, here you go! :)

Dato Lee Chong Wei sure came a lonnng way. Listening to the commentators on him really helped me view things from his perspective and it was really not right at all for Malaysians to stone him whenever he fails to bring back the gold medal. In fact, it was pretty clearly shown how much he's been affected by it all in a recent interview after he was back from the World Badminton Championships 2011.

I did had a thought about the whole thing though. Was actually pretty inspired to make a tribute movie about DLCW just that it'll be a double of him acting out his life. It's actually really interesting to see how this fellow humble Malaysian strives his best to glorify our country and made us proud in countless ways - despite many adversaries caused by us ourselves.

One technical annoyance though! Apparently, this video is blocked in the States, China and Japan as they informed me that the content actually belongs to BWF (Badminton World Federation) so they naturally blocked it in those countries but it's able to be viewed everywhere else in the world. However, the main concern was that Facebook is based in the States.. and in effect of that, when the link is posted there, the thumbnail and title would be blocked - and that really stifles the publicity of this video.

So I'd really appreciate if you guys can lend me a hand to properly title this video and allow others to enjoy the best moments of this match!

Classic Piracy

Interestingly, the idea of this video originated while I was creating subtitles for my previous videos and I thought about how hilarious it was back then when Piracy was done pretty "badly".

Initially planned to be a script for 4 characters, I've edited it to fit in the circumstances at hand and here you go - the final product. I wouldn't say it's the utmost best I can come up with but I figure that this video would help me get back SDP's momentum in the Youtube scene.

I changed the title of the video a few times as well. Was wondering what would be the best way to title in order to allow the audience to catch the main idea of the video. And so finally, "5 Dollars Korean DVD - Complex Love" was given to help people understand that it's regarding piracy (or they might about something else.. which I clarified it immediately at the description lol).

Just for those who didn't know, the guy in the video is an authentic Korean. No, he's not chinese. On the other hand, Fiona (the pretty girl!) is a chinese. Hence, it was quite a struggle for her to literally memorize the sound of Korean characters assisted by our dear Korean friend, Joon-Ho.

One of the few challenging parts were to create the script in order to allow "hilarious" translations to appear from Korean to English. I'm pretty sure some of you guys go through that sort of experience where when you're trying to translate from English to say, Japanese, your friend would most likely say that he/she can't comprehend what you're trying to convey due to the horrible translation from most websites.

On a bright note, the microphone is finally working well so that really helped a lot in picking up clear sound from the dialogues. (LIKE FINALLY!)

I might be making more regarding this topic of subtitles screwing up the content but as for now.. we'll see how it goes. Do like and share it along!

Special thanks to Fiona Lee and Joon-Ho for helping out. As well as 2 random Youtube channels for the BGM :P

A Wonderful Occasion

The first wedding video for SDP! :)

A personal thank you to all who watched and showed your support to my brother's wedding as well as for the video. I'm very sure too, my brother appreciates it in ways where words cannot express it. I'm really glad that after 10 years being into relationship, they finally made the firm decision to settle down. I pray and wish them to have a meaningful and joyous household!

On a technical side of things, I've actually prepared the first 40 seconds previously in order to ensure that I had enough to time to edit on the real day itself. But at the end, I still had insufficient time to do have a wholesome edit at the video.

Given only 3 hours or so, thank God that I managed to at least piece the footage together and made subs for half the video lol. For those who might be rather confused about the previous statement, for Chinese traditional weddings, it's usually conducted where the bridegroom goes and receive the bride (as shown in the video) early in the morning and then goes through the tea ceremony. Usually, they would want to display all that at the same night itself during the wedding dinner, so that for those couldn't be there to witness what happened can then watch it at the dinner itself!

However, this version is final edit with colour correction and complete subtitles so.. all in all, it took me around 8 hours to edit this clip!

If you're wondering why the song of Vanilla Twilight is being used for the video, it's simply because it was the bride's favourite song!

Oh and yes, I've finally completed up the page for my "Video Projects" (You can see it on the right side of the page)! After almost 7 months of establishing SDP, it's finally filled up .:)

Someone in Science with John!

Who knew from a favour done for a church friend could end up to something like this? I think the answer lies particularly to this awesome actor and friend, John Khor :)

The original version (or other words, academic version) of this video can be found at his wall but I've edited it to be more commercialized as there are too many medical jargon and can be rather draggy if not for following the format given by his medical lecturers.

We went to a few nearby locations to take the shots but it was rather rushed to the time constraint of the cast and not to mention of my own schedule as well. I had to discard some of the shots due to poor angling and actually to save myself the embarrassment of doing silly things as requested by John. I wondered why I even agreed to act those silly things. (Now, now, don't start searching for the original video :P)

I've discussed a thing or two with John after seeing his talent in this and we both hope too, that we can produce many more great videos to come.

Meanwhile, I hope that this video served you well in educating you about Louis Pasteur, the person who made the world realized the importance of washing your hands! (and lots more of course.)

SDP wishes all mothers, Happy Mother's Day!

The thought and plot of this video was done overnight and after going through 7 hours of focused work - SDP presents you a 1 minute tribute video to all mothers!

The phrases and scenes in this video can be rather abstract.. and direct as well. Feel free to interpret it in your own context respectively as I deliberately did not put in a mother in the scenes to avoid creating a "figure" that might not appear to be your of your own mother. Except for the last scene, the photos was rather blurred somewhat but it was meant to focus on the struggles that all mothers would go through as a human being - overcoming their mistakes and embracing themselves to be the best mothers they can be.

But I'm pretty sure we can all relate of that one moment when our mothers sort of make us play the piano for our guests or show a few ballet moves. Or that diary which was meant to be kept deep in your cupboard but was discovered by your mother (by accident or maybe not?) while all she was looking for was the long lost table cloth. Or perhaps, the silliest things that you quarrel over about all the time with her but whenever she sees the hurt deep down - she just knows it?

And if you're wondering whether that's my mum in the frame, she sure is! Would like to take this chance to thank her for the past 23 years of my life of all that she has been faithfully loving and looking out for :) See the kitchen at the end of the video? She's been cooking all our meals in there for us for so many years.

On the technical side of things, if you're wondering why some of the scenes may not look so smooth in flow.. it's because I'm trying out a new technique I just picked up. All scenes were taken within my house parameters too as the emphasis of a mother is how she diligently work about in making a home... home.

So go ahead and share this video along as a tribute to all mothers! :)

Heroine vs Hero, a Sucker Punch Parody!

I know, I know. I've heard a lot of comments about how people don't get what's so great about Sucker Punch while I have only a handful of supporters.

Nonetheless, the focus of this video is more towards how things has changed in the 21st century compared to the days where you see men roughing themselves out to save the beauty (..or the world).

Do we actually prefer women doing all the insanely impossible acts to save the world? Sucker punch along with many other movies out there tried pretty hard to portray that women too, can do some real action where there are men who needs to be saved nowadays too. Speak your minds out!

On the technical side of this video, a few highlights would be:

- Quite a few last minute changes, despite all the prior planning made. The actors, location (because of the random rain in the morning), the script.. quite an experience indeed!

- One level of upgrade in editing wise. The teleporting effect, muzzle flares (took me 6 hours just to do that scene @_@) and several few other SFX as well.

- Our very first action video! Be merciful towards that as it's actually our first action video for all of us. The choreographers had quite a challenge pulling it off due to time constraint and to teach the actors the moves on the spot itself.

- Having Gary Liew from DSP to contribute in as DoP (Director of Photography) did help to boost the standards of the video as well. Thanks Gary! :)

- First time actress, Fiona Lee, to helm up quite a major role.

- The mixer was still under service hence.. the audio quality for the dialogues was compromised as the shotgun mic requires it to go along with camera. Apologies on that! Will ensure that next one will have a major improvement on it :)

- FUN FACT: Except for me and Gary, THE ENTIRE CREW HAS NOT WATCH SUCKER PUNCH YET!

We also had Asparagus Monkeys to collaborate with us once more in this video as well. Big thanks to Ian Fan (Hero/Victim)! Do check out their links:-

Retarded

"SO RETARDED!"

That word is used pretty often nowadays to describe almost anything. Whether it's say how silly, how stupid or how hilarious that something is, people will just call it retarded.

Question is - Don't you think it's rather insensitive to those who are mentally challenged as well for those who are close to them?

Appearing in different ways, whether through a hanging out session, Facebook wall post or even a birthday surprise - It still boils down back to the heart. Grasping the fact that we have a mind that is well and good, should we behave in an ungrateful manner by making fun of the mentally challenged (although not intentionally at times)?

Let us not be reckless in our thoughts - make a change!

On the production side of things, once more, credits to the Evelyn and Wen-li for offering their place to shoot the scenes as well as Subway at Taman Tun (if you recognize where it was)!

Being pretty new to the camera, I understand that they're acting may not be superb but I'd say it's a good attempt nonetheless. With proper sharpening of skills along the way, I believe they can be really good at this! :)

This sundae short is actually produced quite a while back, since early February. The reason why it's not released yet was due to certain reasons but well, it's here now! :D

MY Generation competing at the Cannes Film Festival 2011!

It's not too surprising for the fact that many locals here are not too familiar with prestigious film festival - Cannes Film Festival 2011 at France as it's not really publicized much here.. except for movies such as Mr Bean's Vacation (2007) where he traveled far to finally attend it for that year.

Nonetheless, sundae productions along with other indie production houses such UP Films, Damn Syiok Productions and GL Productions have gathered forces to compete for this year with our short film titled as - MY Generation.

We just premiered it 2 days back at The Canteen, PJ Trade Centre where we invited the whole crew and casts to watch and give feedback to the end product! Here are some photos of it:

The official poster of MY Generation

Some dancers from the studio were invited for the premiere as a sign of thank you for their contribution!

Friends of the Director, Gary Liew (Far Right) and Wardrobe, Stephanie Koh (Beside Gary)

Some of the Cast

A little sneak peek of the short film!

Jaime, the actress who played the role of Belle (the main character)

Co-Director/Editor (Myself), Producer (Aaron Lim) & Director (Gary Liew) going through a Q&A Session

Due to the fact that we're submitting this short film to upcoming film competitions/festivals, we're unable to upload this on the internet or we'd be disqualified for our entry. Great apologies on that! However, if you're really interested to have a look at it, just let me know (if you personally know me :P)!

Was a great experience working with these guys and this project pretty much took up 3 weeks of hard work. Will be hoping for the best for the Cannes Film Festival as they'll get back to us before the 14th of April to know whether we made it! :)

Introducing the first Chocolate sundae - a sweet treat for you guys!

It's a self compiled highlights by sundae productions on the recent All England Badminton 2011 Finals between the world's 2 best badminton players: Lee Chong Wei(MAS) vs Lin Dan(CHN). After asking around and finding out that many have missed out this great match due to lacking the time to watch the full match (or just wanting to watch the juicy part of it), here it is - 9 minutes of epicness!

Amazing smashes and drop shots as well as the dives made by both players. GG indeed!

Be sure to share this treat with others :)

I'm glad to be able to have the opportunity to work at this project and may it deliver it's purpose of attracting new members into their chapter.

This 2 minutes video took me almost 20 hours to complete with these programs being utilized:

- Adobe Premiere CS5
- Adobe After Effects CS5
- Adobe Photoshop CS5
- Adobe Illustrator CS5

After filtering through the songs to be used for this video, the vibe of professionalism and brotherhood had to be projected throughout was successfully accomplished in my opinion.

Feel free to contact me if your club or body is interested to produce one as well!

Eenie Meenie Cover by threeminutenights & Charis O.!

This project was done quite a while back but was scheduled by ming han from threeminutenights to upload it today!

Great singing by both ming han and Charis O. on the cover of Eenie Meenie. While editing this video, their voices were stuck in my head for a quite a while.. :o

The footages were recorded by them while I assisted with the video editing as mentioned in the video by Ming Han. After 3 sessions (which total up to around 8 to 9 hours), it's finally done!

GG

A campaign to create the awareness on the acronym of "GG"! Indeed, we Malaysians do know how to create other meanings toward certain words.

This video took a while to edit and shoot but working with Ming Han from threeminutenights once more was awesome. Just look at how priceless his expression is!? We took less than an hour to take those shots and that really shows his talent in acting.

Most of the information are based on observation btw so don't take it too seriously yeah?

So be sure to utilize this short video well when some of your friends or relatives are baffled whenever you say "GG"!
